How to make a daiquiri

Our drinks expert Hannah Guinness shares her at-home bar tips to help you take your daiquiri to the next level.

What is a daiquiri?

One of the all-time great rum cocktails, this Cuban creation first came to fame in the 1920s, when Americans flocked to the island during Prohibition (including one of the daiquiri’s biggest fans, Ernest Hemingway). Its simplicity is its strength: a carefully balanced blend of just lime juice, sugar and white rum. Fresh, bright and zesty, it’s the perfect summer cocktail.

Daiquiri ingredients

As it’s such a simple cocktail, make sure you invest in the best ingredients. This means using fresh lime juice and a quality white rum for this recipe – we’ve tried and tested the best premium rums for you.

Bar hacks and garnishes

A daiquiri is traditionally served in a frozen or chilled coupe or martini glass. Be precise with your measurements, as this cocktail relies on exact proportions. Before cutting the limes, try rolling them under your hands on a worksurface to release more of the juices. For a twist on the classic, try making a Hemingway daiquiri – swap the sugar for maraschino liqueur and add a little grapefruit juice.

Make it a non-alcoholic daiquiri

For a convincing alternative to rum, try mixing 3-4 tbsp of apple juice with a dash of almond extract.

Daiquiri recipe

Ingredients

  • 200g caster sugar
  • 50ml white rum
  • 25ml lime juice
  • lime slices, to garnish

Method

  • STEP 1

Tip the sugar into a pan with 100ml of water, and stir over a low heat until the sugar has dissolved. Cool completely and pour into a sterilised bottle. This sugar syrup will keep in the fridge for up to a month.

  • STEP 2

Tip 15ml of the sugar syrup, the rum and lime juice into a cocktail shaker with ice. Shake until the outside of the shaker feels cold, then strain into a chilled coupe glass. Garnish with a lime slice.

Iced daiquiri lollies

If you like rum, these will become your go-to treat when fighting off that summer heat. Make a rum base, then flavour with your favourite fruit. These are pretty boozy though, so strictly for adults. Triple one of the fruit amounts if you don’t fancy making 3 types.
